The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) is honoring truck drivers during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, recognizing their vital role in the global supply chain. “Our partners in the trucking industry are a critical link between our global vessel services and the domestic supply chain,” said GPA President and CEO Griff Lynch.

To celebrate, GPA employees will distribute safety gloves, water bottles, and chicken sandwiches at the Port of Savannah’s Garden City Terminal truck gates. Lynch emphasized the importance of maintaining smooth truck operations, noting that the Port of Savannah’s efficiency allows drivers to make up to eight truck turns per day, compared to only two per day at Southern California terminals.

Savannah’s ability to handle dual import-export container moves for 80% of truck transactions greatly reduces truck trips, minimizes diesel emissions, and boosts driver profitability. In July and August, truck turn times were as low as 34 minutes for single-container moves and 54 minutes for dual transactions.

The GPA is also investing $4.2 billion into infrastructure projects over the next decade to enhance yard capacity, berth space, and intermodal connectivity. Additionally, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has earmarked $1.5 billion for state transportation infrastructure, which includes 18 projects dedicated to improving freight transportation. Notable projects in Savannah include the Brampton Road Connector and the I-16/I-95 Improvement Project, both slated for completion by 2026.

Georgia Ports remains committed to enhancing the trucking experience, ensuring a fast and efficient flow of cargo across the state and beyond.
