A growing number of universities in the United States are offering Masters in Business Administration programs—many of them onlinewith concentrations in logistics management and other related fields—such as supply-chain management, process reengineering, information technology, strategic planning, and shipping. And for good reason: market demand for supply chain and logistics professionals is growing and so are salaries in the field. Logistics in the U.S. is a $1.3 trillion industry and growing. MBAs in logistics management are well-positioned to secure jobs as logistics consultants and managers, warehouse operations managers, transportation managers, inventory managers, and purchasing managers.

Here is an overview of some of the leading programs in the marketplace.

The full-time MBA global supply chain management specialization at Purdue University, provides “future managers the opportunity to be on the forefront of emerging ideas and technologies that promise to provide a differentiating advantage to businesses in the future.” The specialization encourages students to focus on managing issues associated with structuring, understanding and procuring from global supply chains that include domestic and foreign suppliers; servicing supply chains of global customers; and coordinating supply chains that work across country boundaries. The interdisciplinary nature of the specialization makes it applicable for students pursuing many functional careers. Graduates of the program have been employed by Cummins, Caterpillar, E&J Gallo, EATON, General Motors, Ford, Kimberly Clark, Terex, Target, Navistar, Dell, Starbucks, John Deere, and Amazon.

Central Michigan University’s MBA program offers a concentration in logistics management that promises students mastery “of the art of reducing organizational expenses while enhancing customer service and fiscal outcomes through supply chain management.” Students learn the skills and knowledge necessary for success in managing the flow of resources – material and personnel – in regard to purchasing, inventory, warehousing, and transportation through strategic planning and best practices for military and civilian environments.

Colorado Technical University’s MBA in logistics management, an online program, “addresses the increasing demand for logistics professionals to safely deliver products and services anywhere in the world – on time and on budget.” The curriculum is designed to build upon the business principles of the MBA core to help students work to develop logistics experience in procurement, acquisition, transportation, and contract management. Specialized courses include military, government, and private sector tracks. Students can manage their program via their mobile devices with the CTU Mobile app. The program’s classes begin every eight weeks and run 5½ weeks long.

Liberty University’s MBA program in supply chain management and logistics is designed for business professionals to take their expertise to the next level. Students gain advanced corporate business and executive leadership training with a focus on efficient delivery of business resources. The online degree program focuses on customer service management, warehousing, inventory management, and transportation management.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s online supply chain management MBA ranks in the top 20 nationally in U.S. News & World Report. The program emphasizes the managerial dimension of supply chain operations, with a curriculum divided into six distinct modules: inventory and information management, global operations, distribution and transportation, supplier management, electronic supply chains, and management of product variety. The program features extensive coverage of core business concepts, and studies in e-commerce and technological developments in the context of supply chain logistics. UNC operates an interactive online platform that features live, face-to-face video interactions. UNC has four global immersions a year, giving students the opportunity to learn from business professional around the world.

Lehigh University, located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, offers an online MBA in supply chain management through a program in which students participate in evening courses in real-time with students on campus. Distance learners actively engage with professors and classmates to discuss lectures and ask questions. For those who cannot be online in the evenings when courses meet, Lehigh University also offers asynchronous courses. Lectures for these classes are accessible at any time to make sure that nobody misses out on the conversation. Students in this program learn about strategic supply chain management, transportation logistics, and supply and demand planning. Distance learners can either complete program requirements at their pace or choose the accelerated path to complete the degree in as little as 18 months.

North Carolina State University at Raleigh’s online supply chain management MBA is an interdisciplinary degree that combines knowledge of distribution, logistics purchasing, manufacturing, marketing, and product development. Students work in multidisciplinary teams, developing a comprehensive understanding of supply chains, with an emphasis on information and supply flow. The degree teaches skills necessary for leadership positions in the field, including management report writing, effective business presentation delivery, and team management. NCSU maintains a partnership with the Supply Chain Resource Cooperative, giving students the opportunity to interact with and learn from experienced managers in the industry. Online students can access the SCRC Video Library, which features interviews with researchers and industry professionals on contemporary issues in the field.

The University of Texas at Austin’s MBA in Supply Chain Management online gives students a strategic and application-oriented perspective on logistics operations and resource management. The supply- chain concentration allows students to choose five courses from a wide selection of electives, including service operations, investment theory, and strategic marketing. Students in the MBA program have the opportunity to interact with industry partners of the University of Texas Supply Chain Consortium through an advanced practicum course, gaining real life business skills through industry experience.

Lincoln University of Business & Management offers MBA concentrations on global logistics and supply chain management that provide students with in-depth and global insight into those fields.

The Oregon State University’s supply chain and logistics management option offers students a focus for their MBA that includes acquiring a solid mastery of international operations and supply chain and logistics management concepts and methods. This MBA option prepares graduates for operations, logistics and supply chain management in the service and manufacturing industries.

Portland State University has a master-level certificate designed for MBA students who want a supply-chain credential. Portland State incorporates the circular economy—a model that minimizes economic waste and environmental impact—into its supply-chain management program.
