The strike by truckers at four major drayage firms serving the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach—the nation’s largest port complex—and the Port of San Diego has entered its fourth day. The strike is aimed at drayage companies Pacer Cartage, Intermodal Bridge Transport, Pacific 9 Transportation and Harbor Rail Transport.

The truckers are accusing the four companies with “wage theft,” charging that they work as independent contractors rather than employees entitled to normal employee rights and protections. They claim the misclassification allows companies to pay them less than minimum wage, a spokesman for the drivers said in a statement.

TRUCKER PROTEST SET TO BLOCK TOYOTA CARGO MOVING TO MEXICO

The strike began Monday, and by Wednesday the Teamsters-led protestors had added picket lines at the Union Pacific Intermodal Yard near downtown Los Angeles.

“Primary picket lines are now up at company yards in the greater Los Angeles area and in San Diego, and truckers and their supporters are picketing company trucks at marine terminals, rail yards and customer warehouses as far away as the US/Mexico border,” according to a the Teamsters Union statement released this morning.

Additionally, drivers and their supporters are picketing company trucks as they enter customer warehouses as far south as the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to media reports, striking truckers and their supporters are also planning to protest at the U.S.-Mexico border near San Diego by blocking trucks hauling Toyota cargo from the Los Angeles/Long Beach port complex intended for Toyota plants in Mexico.
